Is there a good place to eat near Honolulu Airport?
Yes - we're at 930 Valkenburgh St in the Moanalua Shopping Center, a short drive from Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL). Because a full plate takes under five minutes from order to table, we're a realistic option on a layover or before an early flight. Open daily 10:30am to 9:00pm, and you can
order ahead for pickup.
How fast is the food, really?
Under five minutes from placing your order to the plate hitting your table. You order at a kiosk, take a number and sit down. There's no holding cabinet - the plate is built when you order it and finishes cooking in front of you.
What is DIY teppanyaki? How does it work?
Your food arrives on an iron plate heated to 500°F, with the beef still raw and the rice still cooking. You finish it yourself: stir everything together, add honey brown or garlic soy sauce, and decide when it's done. Four steps -
sizzle, stir, sauce and savor. If the beef looks underdone when it lands, that's intentional.
Do you serve steak?
Yes. Angus cut steak, ribeye, New York strip and hamburg steak, plus our
limited-time garlic brisket. Because you cook it on the plate yourself, you control the doneness - there's no sending it back.
Is Pepper Lunch family friendly? Is it good for kids?
It works well with kids. Cooking their own food on a sizzling plate holds their attention, the wait is short enough that nobody melts down, and there are milder options like teriyaki chicken, chicken karaage and tofu and veggie plates. The plate stays hot for several minutes, so an adult should help younger children.
Is this a good spot for a date dinner?
It's a casual counter-service restaurant, not white tablecloth - but it's an unusually good low-key date because you're cooking together rather than sitting across from each other waiting. Steak, steam, something to do with your hands. Evenings are quieter than lunch.
Are the portions filling?
Yes. Pepper rice plates are rice and protein and eat heavy; there's a jumbo size if you want more. Sides include chicken karaage, panko shrimp and onion rings. Most people leave full on a single plate.
How much does it cost? Is it good value?
You're getting cooked-to-order Angus beef in about the time a fast food drive-thru would take, so it prices above a plate lunch and below a sit-down steakhouse. Current pricing is always live on the
online order page.
What areas do you serve?
We're in Moanalua Shopping Center on Valkenburgh Street, and we regularly serve guests from Salt Lake, Aliamanu, Foster Village, Aiea, Halawa, Pearl City, Kalihi, and Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, plus anyone stopping in from the Navy Exchange or Honolulu Airport. Free parking on site.
Do you offer takeout and pickup?
Yes -
order online for pickup. Worth knowing that the hot plate is the whole experience, so dining in gets you the sizzle. Takeout travels well but arrives already cooked through.
Are there vegetarian options?
There's a tofu and veggie pepper rice and a tofu and veggie curry. Note that plates are cooked on shared iron surfaces, so if you have a strict dietary requirement please ask the crew before ordering.
Are you near the Navy Exchange (NEX) or Pearl Harbor?
